A Reliable System - Reaching Its Limits

At NG Nordic in Nyborg – previously known as Fortum – the classic ABB AC400 controller reliably managed the company’s complex hazardous waste processing plant for many years. It was a trusted and stable solution that consistently delivered performance. However, as spare parts became increasingly scarce and official support was ending, the system was approaching the end of its lifecycle.

Bridging the Gap Between Old and New

Modernizing a plant’s control system may appear technical, complex, and time-consuming, especially when transitioning from an AC400 controller to an AC800M. With the right solution, it doesn’t have to be.

At Tipatek, we’ve developed a specialized software tool that ensures the upgrade is smooth and efficient. It automatically converts existing AC400 code so it is fully compatible with the new system, eliminating the need for manual code rewriting.

While this was the first time the conversion tool was applied at NG Nordic, our collaboration with the company spans many years. This long-standing partnership and mutual trust were key to ensuring an efficient and accurate upgrade of the control system.

"The project was a success – not because everything went flawlessly; with tasks this complex, we never expect that. But Tipatek was there, responded quickly, and resolved issues as they arose. They stayed on-site until everything was running optimally again, which gave us a strong sense of security throughout the process," says Klaus, DCS Specialist at NG Nordic.

Back in Operation After Just Two Hours

The switchover was completed within a single working day. The plant was shut down, the new controller installed – and after only two hours of downtime, NG Nordic was fully operational again.

“We stayed on-site in the days that followed to monitor the plant closely and resolve the small issues that always arise in projects like this. We stayed until everything was running optimally – that’s part of our approach” says Brian Quaade, CTO and Partner at Tipatek.

At NG Nordic, the difference was immediately felt:

"To be honest, we were a bit nervous about pressing the button – this is critical equipment, and it simply has to work. But it did, flawlessly. Tipatek truly proved their worth," says Klaus with a smile.
