Case: Technology from Funen Powering Europe's Green Transition 

In the heart of Funen, technology is being developed that plays a key role in Europe’s first full-scale CO₂ storage project. When Denmark’s Minister for Climate, Lars Aagaard, visited Tipatek in Odense on October 27, it was to see how Funen’s automation expertise and strong collaboration across local companies are contributing to Project Greensand and to Denmark’s ambition of reducing CO₂ emissions by 70% by 2030 and achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

The visit from the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, Lars Aagaard, marked an important milestone in the Greensand project, bringing together representatives from All-Energy, FUJAS, INEOS, Level 3 Technologies, and Tipatek to share knowledge and strengthen collaboration.

What is Project Greensand?

Project Greensand is a pioneering Danish climate initiative designed to demonstrate and scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) – the process of capturing and safely storing CO₂ underground. 

Launched in 2019 as a Danish pilot project, it is led by INEOS Energy and Wintershall Dea in close collaboration with a number of Danish and international partners, including GEUS, Ramboll, BlueNord (formerly Noreco), Aalborg University, and technology companies such as Tipatek. 

The aim was to prove that CO₂ can be stored safely and permanently in depleted oil and gas fields in the North Sea. In 2023, the pilot phase was successfully completed, making Denmark the first EU country to demonstrate safe offshore CO₂ storage. 

The project has received support from the Danish Energy Agency’s Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), as well as financial backing from the EU Innovation Fund, which supports the development of green technologies across Europe. 

CO₂ is first captured from large emission sources on land, separated from flue gas, and cooled into liquid form. It is then transported to the Port of Esbjerg, where a dedicated CO₂ terminal can receive up to 6,000 tons of liquid CO₂ at a time and handle 60 to 70 truck deliveries per day. 

From Esbjerg, the CO₂ is loaded onto a specialized vessel – the world’s first CO₂ carrier, Carbon Destroyer 1 – and shipped to the Nini platform in the North Sea. Here, it is pumped 1,800 meters beneath the seabed into a former oil and gas reservoir, where it is permanently and safely stored. 

Once fully operational, Greensand will become the EU’s first large-scale CO₂ storage project, capable of removing hundreds of thousands of tons of CO₂ from the atmosphere every year.

Funen Technology Powering a European Project

At Tipatek, the development of advanced automation and safety systems has been a cornerstone of the technical foundation for Project Greensand. The company provides DCS/SCADA solutions, control systems, and testing for the systems that ensure stable operations, monitoring, and data security across the entire value chain – from the CO₂ terminal in Esbjerg to the storage site beneath the North Sea. 

Chairman Troels Vestergaard Johansen welcomed visitors and emphasized the local impact:
"It is a great honor to show how technology companies from Funen have become part of something much bigger. Projects like Greensand don’t just address climate change – they also create local jobs, skills, and growth. For Tipatek, the green transition brings new opportunities and knowledge here on Funen, and we are proud of that."

Peter Hindsberger, Senior Regulatory & Public Affairs Manager at INEOS Energy, then provided an update on the project and international collaboration:
"We are sending a signal to the world that this is possible," he said. "Progress in Esbjerg is going well, and we are on track. Funen companies were a natural choice, not least because Funen is centrally located between Esbjerg and our headquarters in Virum. This makes collaboration both fast and efficient." 

He also highlighted the pace and dynamism of the partnership:
"From the start, we received fantastic engagement and flexibility. We have been able to work very effectively together – between our teams in Virum, Esbjerg, and here on Funen. This has not been a traditional project path; we have had to make decisions and act quickly. In fact, some of the tanks were purchased before the design process was fully complete, which shows how agile this process has been."

CEO Per Nørgaard Lund added a technological perspective:
"With over 30 years of experience in control and automation solutions for the energy sector, we are now applying that knowledge to the green transition," he explained. "At Tipatek, technology always starts with people. When our employees thrive, they create world-class solutions – and that is what our customers experience."


CTO and Partner Brian Quaade emphasized the collaboration behind the project:
"We are proud to have brought Funen companies together around Greensand," said Quaade. "We are paving the road as we go, and that requires both bold companies and agile tech partners. The collaboration works because we know each other, share values, and act quickly."

A Funen Collaboration with Global Impact

Project Greensand is the result of a unique collaboration between several Funen-based companies, each contributing specialized expertise. Together, Tipatek, All Energy, FUJAS, and Level 3 Technologies have developed and integrated solutions spanning process design, safety, control, monitoring, and testing. 

All Energy ApS was responsible for process and functional design, with their engineers producing the functional specifications that guide the programming of the entire facility. Their work has been crucial in ensuring that the control systems operate safely and efficiently. 

FUJAS A/S has supplied control and main power panels for the maritime and offshore components of the project, while Level 3 Technologies ApS has developed software to manage access and logistics at the Esbjerg terminal.

Automation, Safety, and Green Innovation

During the visit, the Minister for Climate toured Tipatek’s testing facility, where the team demonstrated how Funen-based companies are collaboratively developing and testing the systems that make CO₂ storage a practical reality. 

"It is inspiring to visit a group of companies in Odense contributing to one of the green transition’s most important projects, CCS," said Minister for Climate Lars Aagaard. "If Denmark is to lead on the climate agenda, we need to succeed with CCS. It is encouraging to see the level of effort being invested here on Funen."

The Greensand project is the world’s first full-scale offshore CO₂ storage initiative and one of Europe’s most ambitious climate projects. It connects CO₂ from Danish biogas producers to underground storage beneath the North Sea via the newly built CO₂ carrier Carbon Destroyer 1 – a project that demands innovation, collaboration, and precision at every stage.

A Funen Contribution to Global Climate Goals

For Tipatek, the minister’s visit marked both recognition and a milestone. The company has grown alongside the project, developing new expertise and creating jobs as the initiative has progressed. 

"It takes visionary politicians, bold companies, and agile tech partners," concluded Per Nørgaard Lund. "Greensand demonstrates that when we combine human knowledge with technology, we can create solutions that make a real difference – both for the climate and for Denmark."
